Cold Weather Cycling, more bike gear

It's icy here, and we are on track for the wettest November ever recorded in the Puget Sound (last record was many decades ago at 15.33 inches of precipitation). It's also the coldest November 29th ever recorded here. We were in the low teens here in our little town in the Cascade foothills.

Cycling in these conditions is unsafe, but a few degrees warmer...who knows? Here are some more resources for cold weather cycling:

International Bike Touring

On our cycling discussion list at Microsoft, someone sent a message saying, in effect, "I'm quitting work to ride my bicycle all over the world." It's an enchanting prospect, and those of us who love to pedal cannot help but dream a little when we read such announcements.

In the well wishing that was sent around were included links to Web sites maintained by others who are biking around the world and parts unknown. I have included a list of those links here along with a link or two of resources you may need if you decide to undertake a similar adventure:

Duvall Flood Photos November 2006

Our little town along with a few others in the area made national news because of the massive flooding on the Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers. It is truly astonishing to observe the power of nature, and I am reminded of how emphemeral our crafts are.

On Wednesday, I scooted about and took a number of photographs, a sub-set of which I have placed here:

Fortunately, the number of injuries was small, and the losses, while massive for some of our farmers, where small when compared against the power and expanse of the flood.
